Kurt Hellberg was a strong-willed and inventive entrepreneur. Born and raised in the city of Göteborg (Gothenburg) he moved and started the business in 1950 in Erikstad, south of Mellerud, Sweden with the manufacturing of blast doors to air raid shelters. He collected his work force every morning in a truck from the surrounding farms and drove them back again when the work day was finished. After moving operations to Mellerud the factory expanded constantly with new extensions and new work premises. Goods haulage started early on with a railway track drawn right into the factory area. Hellbergs were not only manufacturing doors for shelters, they also manufactured various details for equipment used in air purification units, shelter ventilators and gas traps. Kurt Hellberg was early out with well-being measures for his personnel. They had their own canteen, petrol station and also the possibility to buy refrigerators and freezers at discount prices. Horses were a dominating spare time occupation. Kurt Hellberg had his own trotting-track on his farm in Mellerud. In time Hellbergs manufactured basically everything that concerned doors, fire and security doors, marine doors, plastic doors for cold storages, garage doors, hangar doors and even dog cages. Hellbergs International AB was founded in 1984 and the marine door business was overtaken to this company. Kurt Hellberg’s son Lennart Hellberg, was in charge of the operations. During the ensuing years more marine door models were tested and certified. These types of doors now constitute the backbone of Hellbergs. The company’s own product development and it’s sensibility to the wishes and requirements of the market has made it strong in the international competition. Hellbergs International has today one of the widest range of marine doors in the world. Since 2005 Hellbergs International has been run by Lennart Hellberg’s son, Sebastian Hellberg. |
